Chris Cunningham, born in 1970 in Reading, is a British director known for his experimental and unsettling music videos. He began his career as a comic book artist and worked in special effects on films like Alien3 and Nightbreed. Spotted by Stanley Kubrick for his animatronic work on the AI project, he later turned to directing. He rose to prominence in the late 1990s with cult music videos like Come to Daddy and Windowlicker for Aphex Twin, Frozen for Madonna, and All Is Full of Love for Björk, which earned him multiple awards and a place in major museum collections such as MoMA and DAD.
His radical visual style blends altered bodies, robotics, and syncopated rhythm. Alongside directing, Cunningham has created video installations exhibited at leading international institutions, composed electronic music, developed live audiovisual performances, and directed high-profile ad campaigns. He has also designed album covers for artists like Björk and Squarepusher. To this day, he continues to explore the boundaries of image, sound, and technology through bold and hybrid projects.
